Graduation & Academic Convocation

Our school year has ended on such a positive note, none more so than at our two major academic celebrations:  our Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2014 and Academic Convocation for Grades 9 - 11.  Our students represent the highest level of commitment to our school's core values and demonstrated this in each of these beautiful, memorable ceremonies.

Pictured below are photos from Academic Convocation, followed by all of this year's award winners.

Prom

Prom night started with the Grand March, sponsored by The Savings Bank, at the upper common.  Thank you to Class of 2014 Advisors, Scott Lashmit. & Bill Hoover,...
The students looked great for their families & friends at the promenade...
Then off to Danversport Yacht Club for dinner & dancing. Without a doubt, the best part of the night is when WHS teachers started to arrive - at one point more than 20 - to see our kids.  At each arrival they were swarmed with students who were so happy to see them!

We are all very proud of our Seniors!

A Class Day to remember

Today is Senior Class Day and it's after 9pm and the Class of 2014 is happy and worn out! They started with a cookout and DJ at Walsh Field this afternoon, complete with carnival games and photo booth, then moved inside to the theater where the students watched their homemade Senior movies (awesome! sentimental! beautiful!) followed by a really fun hypnotist show...

We moved to the cafe for ice cream sundaes and yearbook distribution - their favorite part of the event - where they've been signing each other's books for more than an hour...

And we'll finish off the night by sending the soon-to-be graduates home with their caps & gowns for the big day on Saturday!

Memorial Day Assembly

Memorial Day Ceremony
Field House
Wakefield Memorial High School
5/23/14

Following this morning's Memorial Day assembly, a 100-year-old WWII veteran said to me, filled with emotion: "I will never forget this day".

I agree with his heartfelt sentiment, as today was the best Memorial Day ceremony in memory and among my very best days as an educator at Wakefield Memorial High School. I have never been more proud of our student body:  the level of respect, dignity, engagement, and appreciation exuded by all of the nearly 1,000 students in our field house was extraordinary and in many ways unique to who we are as a school.  The students' sense of community, demonstrated by their acceptance and respect for one another and our honored veterans, is far from typical.  Many students dressed up for school today. Many students were visibly emotional at various points of the program, especially when we recognized the four members of the Class of 2014 who will enter the service:

Derek Dussault & Sam Carr, US Navy; Brian Auld, Army; Steve Scarpa, Marines
The prolonged, meaningful standing ovation offered by our students to our veterans was particularly moving:

A gathering of our participating veterans following the ceremony
And the many students who spoke, sang, played an instrument, presented the colors, filmed the program - all of them so very professional.  Pictured below is senior Cam Ballard, who put together a World War II presentation, his area of great passion and expertise, and inspired us with a recitation of a WWII letter to servicemen.

My sincerest thanks to Kathy Lopez, Jack O'Brien, Rob Rozzi, and all members of the Social Studies Department for the organization of this special event.  Also kudos to Tom Bankert, Ana Morel, and our music students for the beautiful music during the ceremony. And finally I would like to extend my appreciation, on behalf of all of us at Wakefield Memorial High School, to the veterans who enriched our lives with their presence today.

METCO Senior of the Year

Congratulations to WHS senior Anthony Lawson, recognized last night at METCO's Evening of Champions, where he was honored as Wakefield High School's "Senior of The Year". Anthony is truly one of the shining stars of the Class of 2014 -  a great student, a successful athlete, and most importantly an incredible person and friend to all.

Service, Integrity, Leadership, & Spirit

Congratulations to Brian Dickey and Emily Hammond in their selection as 2014 SILS Award winners.  The SILS award for Service, Integrity, Leadership, and Spirit is sponsored by the Middlesex League Principals.  Each of the twelve Middlesex League schools selects two juniors to receive this prestigious honor at the annual awards luncheon, held today in Burlington, MA.

In addition to the qualities listed in the award’s title, recipients must demonstrate an excellence in academics, exemplary attendance, active participation in extracurricular activities, and a commitment to school and/or community service.

Junior SILS recipients Brian Dickey & Emily Hammond

I had the honor of introducing these two outstanding students at the awards ceremony today.  As SILS recipients, they both personify all of the qualities that characterize the award.  Brian is an intelligent young man of exceptionally strong personal character. He is kind and accepting, approaches all that he does with commitment and enthusiasm, and he is a person of great integrity.  Emily has such an unassuming, humble manner, coupled with the poise, confidence, and resilience of the most naturally gifted leaders I know.  She has a warm and engaging sense of humor, is generous and kind, and has the most wonderful spirit that ignites the very best in others.

I was so proud of Brian & Emily as they represented Wakefield Memorial High School today!

Student artists recognized at Boston Globe Art Show

2014 Globe Art Show Winners
Wakefield High School receives 20 awards

Silver Key Award Winners:

Michael Calamonici, After the Rain, Digital Photography

What is the Globe Art Show?   Each year the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers partners with The Boston Globe to bring the competition to local communities. The Globe Art Exhibit is the longest running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S.  A panel of professionals review each work of art using the following criteria: originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice.
The Awards are an important opportunity for students to be recognized for their creative talents. This exciting competition is open to art students in grades seven through 12 in all public, private and parochial schools in Massachusetts. The Alliance has an impressive legacy dating back to 1923 and a noteworthy roster of past winners including Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon and Robert Redford.
The Wakefield High School Visual Arts Department recently entered the 2014 Boston Globe Art Exhibit.  High school students received two silver keys, and 18 Honorable Mentions. Listed below are our winners. The entire collection of award winning work will be exhibited at Arts Night on June 11 at the Americal Civic Center.
